Micro Pods

This is my third tiny house, inspired by the shortage of student accommodation and the hassle of building a permanent studio or cottage (expensive plans, rising building costs, contractor risks, bond regulations, building restrictions, rates, building inspectors, antiquated and municipal serving regulations, etc). It's footprint is just shy of 2.5 m wide and 3.2 long so that it can be transported and fit into the smallest of spaces. (Watch video below)

The beauty of this robust design is that it is an entirely mobile, plug in and live, lock-up and go unit that could be placed in a retreat setting where you're not allowed to build, in your back garden as extra accommodation, on site whilst building, craned onto a roof, used as a getaway venue with home comforts - pretty much anywhere you can imagine.

This unit is designed to simply plug into water and electricity, the loo being either a compost toilet or chemical loo. The alternatives to electricity are solar and gas, or even an efficient wood burning stove and candles. A gutter allows water collection and the shower and sink grey water can be run into a simple soak away.

This design focuses on student accommodation with a dedicated study table, permanent single loft bed, convertible double bed dinette, a simple kitchen with sink and fridge, shower and toilet cubicle and amble shelves and storage. There are 8 plug points for all the electrical and computer gadgets of today. A flat screen TV could be easily installed.

The shower is an instant electric water heater- 8 Kilowatt - giving plenty of hot water that can be used for the sink as well. The shower stall is fully insulated, vented and big enough for a decent shower. There is a choice of composting toilet or chemical toilet.the shower stall is well ventilated with a top hung opaque window set at the highest condensation point.

All the walls are double insulated with 50 mm Ecotherm, sheathed with Zincalume and finished with solid Spruce tongue and groove planking. The Spruce framing shown below is built into a heavy-duty steel frame and the entire unit sits on a pressure  treated sled. No corners have been cut and the R values exceed standard building code. All the materials are waterproof and sealed with environmentally friendly finishes, both inside and out.

The loft is easily accessible with 3 built in steps that are comfortable to use when half asleep. The single bed has its own reading light, bedside table and vents to ensure good ventilation with no condensation. The lounge area has ample headroom, 2 x 2 seater dinette with 2 backrest configurations, one for lounging, the other for more upright functions. The table easily slots into the settee footwell creating a 100 mm thick double bed and backrest made of high density foam.

All 5 windows are top quality aluminium epoxy coated, professionally installed and perfectly sealed giving exceptional ventilation and natural light whilst maintaining perfect insulation. The beautifully crafted Larch stable door with a natural light top section adds security and another ventilation option.

Electricity is managed through a distribution board, earth leakage and individual circuit breakers for the shower, 8 plug points and the 3 spotlights. There is one full size cupboard for clothing and 4 large lockers under the dinette for storage. The kitchen has 3 deep shelves under the sink and 3 long ones above. The study has a similar arrangement. There is ample space for a hanging rail at the foot of the loft bed if required.

This unit is now available for delivery at R 109,000 inclusive.
